STARTUP BASE’S IDEA OF THE DAY
10 June 2026

🌳 ShadeSense: Maps, But It Routes You Through the Shade
Every maps app optimises for the same two things: fastest route, shortest distance. Nobody's optimising for the thing that actually decides whether your summer walk is pleasant or miserable, the sun. In a country where it's 40+ degrees half the year, "which side of the street has shade" is a real question with no app to answer it. Here's what we're thinking.
💡 The Idea:
A maps layer that routes you through shade instead of sun, factoring in tree cover, building shadows, and the time-of-day sun angle, while keeping travel times realistic.
🛠️ Product:
It's a lightweight web app that sits on top of regular maps. Pick a destination and it shows you an alternative path scored by how much shade it offers, how much sun exposure you'll dodge, and how many extra minutes (if any) it costs.
The shade data comes from satellite imagery, street-tree maps, and the sun's actual angle at that hour, so a route that's shaded at 8am might reroute by noon. Users can also drop "hot spot" markers to flag brutal stretches, and share a "cool route" with a friend or a caregiver.
The magic moment: you enter a destination and see a path annotated with "73% shaded, 4 mins longer," then walk it and realize you're not drenched in sweat for once.
💵 The Model: Free for consumers, with a $2.99/month premium tier (90%+ margin, it's all digital). The real money is enterprise: hospitals running cardiac-rehab programs, corporate health-and-safety teams, and municipal parks departments pay $5k to $25k+ a year for the API and multi-site access. Worker safety and heat liability are budget lines that are only growing.
🚀 The Scale Play: Start as a consumer app for runners and walkers, but the endgame is becoming the "heat-safety layer" that other apps license, fitness platforms, delivery apps routing gig workers, even regular maps. Own the shade data and the routing API, and you're infrastructure every heat-exposed business eventually needs. That's what makes you an acquisition target for a mapping or fitness giant.

💰Founder Fuel - The Big Money News, made simple.
🤑 Money Shot: Apple just did the unthinkable: it's paying Google ~$1B a year to run a custom Gemini model behind its rebuilt "Siri AI." For a company that spent a decade insisting it would do AI alone, renting a rival's brain is a stunning admission.
The lesson for founders: even the most resourced company on earth decided buying beat building. Stop reinventing the engine, build on top of one.
🤖 The Big Drop: Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5, the first public model in a new "Mythos" tier that sits above everything it's ever shipped, state-of-the-art on nearly every benchmark and free on paid plans until June 22.
If you're building anything agentic or code-heavy, the ceiling on what a solo founder can ship just went up again. Go use it before the free window closes.

🍻 Drunk Business Idea: ShadowTax™

What if landlords had to pay you for stealing your sunlight, or your shade?
Introducing ShadowTax™, an app that calculates exactly how much shade that new high-rise stole from your balcony and auto-files a complaint with a dramatic before/after sun simulation. Premium tier lets you "rent out" your own building's shadow to the sweaty pedestrians below.
