STARTUP BASE’S IDEA OF THE DAY
2 July 2026
🪔 PujaSetu: booking a pandit, minus the panic
Ask anyone who has organised a griha pravesh or a shraadh recently. Finding a good pandit is still pure word of mouth. You call two uncles, forward a WhatsApp number, and hope someone reliable turns up on time with the right samagri. For a family abroad who cannot be in the room, the worry is even heavier. These are important moments, and right now they run on luck.
Here's what we're thinking:
💡 The Idea:
PujaSetu is a marketplace that connects families with verified, reviewed priests for in-person or live-streamed pujas, bundled with a ready samagri kit and a recording sent afterwards.
🛠️ Product:
Every priest on the platform is checked before they ever reach your home. That means identity verification, a recorded audition, reference checks, and a profile that shows their tradition, languages, sample recordings, and a reliability score for punctuality. You see who you are booking, not a mystery number.
Alongside the priest comes a samagri kit assembled in temple towns like Varanasi and Vrindavan, with each item measured, labelled, and laid out so nothing is missing when the ceremony begins. If loved ones are overseas, the puja can be streamed live, and a clean recording is delivered to them right after.
The magic moment: a punctual priest arrives, the exact samagri is already arranged on a fresh thali, the ceremony streams live for family who could not travel, and the recording lands in their inbox before the diya has cooled.
💵 The Model: A standard home puja package is priced around ₹1,499, with a gross margin of roughly 40 to 45%. That comes from a 20 to 25% commission on the priest's service and a 30 to 50% margin on the samagri kit, so both halves of the booking earn.
🚀 The Scale Play: Start with the one thing families dread getting wrong, then extend into the wider ritual economy: samagri supply, temple donations, pilgrimages, astrology consultations, and full ceremony planning. Done well, PujaSetu becomes the trusted layer that families at home and abroad rely on for every occasion.

💰Founder Fuel - The Big Money News, made simple.
🤑 Money Shot: : Lab-grown diamond brand Limelight Diamonds just raised ₹275 crore in a strategic round led by its own core promoters, the Bhathwari Group, with strategic partners from the jewellery industry taking part. Here is the detail worth sitting with. The round also saw strong participation from several of the company's own franchise partners. When the people closest to your business, the ones running your stores, put their money back in, that is a louder vote of confidence than any marquee VC logo. The cash is going into vertical integration, manufacturing, and retail expansion, as Limelight pushes from 75-plus stores toward 200 by 2027.
Founder Lesson: Insider and partner money funding physical growth is a signal the business is working, not a search for a bailout.
📈 BIG DROP: Anthropic had a big Wednesday. It launched Claude Sonnet 5, which it describes as close to its top model Opus 4.8 but at a significantly lower cost, with an introductory API price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output through August 31, 2026.
Same day, it restored global access to its most powerful public model, Claude Fable 5, after the US Commerce Department lifted the export controls it had imposed weeks earlier. (If you want the full back-and-forth on that saga, Anthropic has laid it out on its own site.)
Founder Takeaway: the story here is not the flashy frontier model, it is the cheap-but-capable tier. Build your everyday AI features on the affordable model and save the premium one for the hardest 5% of tasks.

🔍 Founder Finds - Six quick startup updates.
🧴 Ananta Capital bought a majority stake in Shark Tank deodorant brand Phitku in a deal valued at around ₹100 crore, its first institutional money after being fully bootstrapped and profitable.
Takeaway: a focused, profitable single-product brand can hand founders a partial exit in barely a year.
💊 Nutrition brand Supply6 raised ₹48 crore led by Unilever Ventures, with actor Kriti Sanon investing and AB de Villiers as brand ambassador.
Takeaway: 80% of its revenue comes from just two hero products, proof that focus beats a bloated catalogue.
🎮 Dream11 parent Dream Sports is shutting its fintech arm Dream Money less than a year after launch, another rollback triggered by the 2025 ban on real-money gaming.
Takeaway: diversifying out of panic rarely sticks, so build the new thing before the old one breaks.
📱 ShareChat's parent Mohalla Tech says it will chase an IPO of as much as $400 million next year after turning operationally profitable in the quarter that began in April.
Takeaway: even a bruised unicorn finds a path out once the unit economics finally turn.
🏦 Kotak Mahindra Bank is buying Deutsche Bank's India retail and wealth business for ₹282 crore, a book that carries about ₹29,000 crore in loans, ₹16,000 crore in deposits, and 1.5 lakh affluent customers.
Takeaway: when foreign banks retreat from Indian retail, domestic giants scoop up premium customer books cheaply.
💸 UPI value slipped 3% to ₹28.92 trillion in June, cooling off May's all-time record, though it was still up 20% year on year.
Takeaway: one soft month off a record high is a breather, not a wobble, in India's payments engine.
🍻 Drunk Business Idea: Samagri SOS™

What if the one item your pandit needs mid-puja could arrive before the shloka ends?
Introducing Samagri SOS™, the panic button that dark-store-dispatches a lone supari, a missing kalava, or that one very specific flower the second the pandit raises an eyebrow.
Samagri SOS™. Because "arre yeh toh hai hi nahi" should never end a ceremony.
👋 That's a wrap
