STARTUP BASEβS IDEA OF THE DAY
22 June 2026
PehlaAahaar: Baby's First Food, Done Right ππΆ
Ask any new Indian parent about their baby's first solid food and you'll hear the same thing: homemade khichdi. It's what we trust. The problem is making it properly, soaking, grinding, cooking it in stages, is a part-time job, and most working parents just don't have the hours. So they reach for packaged baby food and immediately feel guilty, because half of it is imported, loaded with sugar, and costs a bomb.
Here's what we're thinking:
π‘ The Idea:
Clean Indian baby food made from stuff parents already trust, ragi, moong dal, sattu, in the right texture for each age. No sugar, no preservatives, pediatrician-approved.
π οΈ Product:
It's basically homemade khichdi without the work. Instant porridges and purees made from real Indian grains, sealed fresh, labelled by age stage, with a little scoop so you're not guessing portions.
The grains get steam-cooked and stone-ground so the texture is right for a baby, then tested in a lab so parents know exactly what's going in. There's even a WhatsApp feeding schedule that tells you what to give and when.
The magic moment: you pour hot water, stir for ten seconds, and hand over a warm bowl that tastes like home, except you didn't wake up at 5am to make it.
π΅ The Model: βΉ1,299 a month per stage box, with healthy margins (it costs about βΉ520 to make). The good part is parents reorder every month for a year or more, so one happy customer sticks around for a long time.
π The Scale Play: Get parents to trust you at the very first bite, through pediatricians and hospital kits, then grow with the kid. First food, then finger foods, then immunity blends, then clean snacks. If a parent trusts you with their baby's first meal, they'll trust you for years.

π€Β Money Shot:Β : Here's a business nobody brags about at parties: Diapers.
Swara Baby, the FirstCry-backed maker of diapers and baby hygiene products, is filing for a βΉ1,000 crore IPO built on nothing but the stuff parents restock every single week, no app, no AI, just relentless repeat demand, which turns out to be one of the most bankable things a business can have.
πΒ Trend with Benefits:Β Indian startup funding hit $302M during June 12-18, up 114% from the week before, led almost single-handedly by Sarvam's $234M round. But strip out that one mega-deal and the week was thin.
The Takeaway: Headline funding numbers are increasingly propped up by one or two giant AI rounds, while everyone else fights for smaller cheques. Don't read "funding is booming" and assume the money's flowing to you, it's concentrating, not spreading.
